To promote a new music release
This means when an artist tries to advertise a new song or a new album through a music video
On July 23rd 2015 a British metal band called 'Bring Me The Horizon' released their first video for their song "Throne" which is for their upcoming album "That's the Spirit" this music video was the first music video that was released before the album was, so it got a lot of attention from their audience, by which is one of the main reasons that their new album "That's the Spirit" got number one on the Apple charts. releasing it before the album, got a lot of people to see it since many people would rather watch a music video than just listen to a song since you still get to listen to a song, but alongside a video that you might have not seen. Not only does this video promote the new album but it also promotes recent albums by showing the artwork from them in the background of the video such as at 0:08 it shows the artwork for the album "Count Your Blessings" and at 1:25 it shows something similar to the artwork from the album "There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret." they do this so people might want to listen to there old music.
To create synergy (business tie ins) with other media industries
Synergy is when one media product works with another media product such as collaborating or to promote both products
On May 9th 2014 British artist "Ed Sheeran" released the music video for his song "All Of The Stars" and in the video you mainly see little parts of the movie inside the music video such as lines inside the book in the video on a wall, this is from the book.movie "A Fault In Our Stars" such as at 3:21 when it shows a shot from the actual movie, it happens throughout the music video up to the end, this music video creates synergy because this song is the part of the soundtrack for the movie "Fault In Our Stars" and by having those lines from the book on the wall it shows how important the story is, and if people listen to the song and not know the movie, you might want to watch the movie after listening to this song.
To be art in their own right
This means how the artist expresses their creativity and there own vision of art in the form of a music video.
On September 12th 2014 the American masked band from Iowa "Slipknot" released a music video for their song "The Devil in I" and the video contains a lot of graphic content but in interviews Shawn Crahan aka "Clown" the one that produced the video said that the deaths in the video were done in an artistic way since all deaths in the video were ways that the members actually wanted to die which is why "Clown" put the write amount of colour in the shots to make the settings right and they used the right amount of fake blood to make it look like how they imagined, they did this in a very artistic way since by showing the bizarre ways that they wanted to die reveals what kind of people they are. By showing the artistic side, Slipknot has shown there weird side at the same time, most Slipknot songs have dark meanings but this music video adds to the dark meaning of the song. When the chorus starts the line goes "Step inside, see the devil in I" whenever that line is sung a death happens such as when Sid Wilson bit off his own fingers/ arm at 1:55 and when Mick Thompson ripped off his own face at 3:05 which was revealed as "letting out the devil in i" Shawn has done this in a very artistic way.
To extend the playability of and provide additional income from a song
This means when a music video will make the audience might want to watch more videos from the artist or watch the video again

On July 18th 2009 the American band "Panic! At The Disco" made their first song that went huge in ratings named "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" they tried to make this song and video memorable, they added a catchy beat to it and fun lyrics, the video was a bit random and unexpected which is why this music video and the song to so popular, the video contained a wedding happening and then a bunch of people come in with costumes and start dancing around, this happens at 3:04 when the singer enters the room followed by a bunch of people in costumes. They tried to make this music video, a video that people would like to see many times since it is a very good video where a
lot happens alongside a very catchy song that you might want to hear more than once, by doing this people watching might want to watch more of their music videos to see if there is any more music videos like this one. Which makes people want to watch the video over and over again, which gains popularity for that song/music video and that leads to more money for the artist.

To create a visual representation of the artist
This means how an artist presents themselves in the music video and how you should see that artist

On October 25th 1995 "Marilyn Manson" released a music video for his cover of the song "sweet dreams (are made of these)" in this video he showed his "weird side" and the video contained him in multiple costumes and doing weird movements throughout the video, such as at 0:37 where it seems like he is wearing some sort of machine on his head while does some weird movements while directly looking at the camera. This music video reveals to us that Marilyn Manson is clearly not what most people would call a "normal person" and he wanted to show that, he reveals that through many of his videos but this one explains it pretty well. Marilyn Manson tries to separate himself from others and tries to prove that he is different by the way he does his music videos.
