Goodwins Ideas

Andrew Goodwin is a man who made a theory about music videos and said all the differences about all the types of them, and made a book titled "Dancing in the Distraction Factory: Music, Television and Pop Culture"

ILLUSTRATING

Illustrating music videos are music videos that has what is happening in the video is happening in the song, and they help people understand more what is happening in the video. In this music video made by Tenacious D, they tell a story throughout the video that starts at 1:10 and they tell a story throughout the video, an example of this is at 1:24 they said that a demon shined out in the middle of the road and that is what literally happened in the video at the same time.

AMPLIFYING

Amplifying music videos are music videos that match a certain mood and try to make the audience feel a certain way. By adding certain type of content in a music video such as a setting or costume, can make a person feel a certain way. If the music video has bright colors and have more cheerful setting in them, it will create a more happy mood, but if you have a dark background with something such as rain, it would make a depressing mood for the audience. This is done very well in this video as it starts at 0:10 they show rain which connotes that this is supposed to create a depressing mood.

CONTRADICTING

Contradicting music videos are a type of music videos that contain content that you would not expect in a music video of the genre, an example of this is like having rainbows and unicorns in a heavy metal music video, as a heavy metal music video, as in heavy metal music videos, they would contain a very dark setting and dark props, such as blood and a dark room. In this music video they start off at 0:02 in a posh mansion which a posh man telling a story, which leads to at 0:52 which has a cartoon setting with all the trees and clouds smiling. This is something that you would not expect in a rock music video, and is something you would rather have in a pop video.

ICONOGRAPHY AND GENRE CONVENTIONS

This type of music video is when a music video has content in it that makes it obvious that is focuses on a certain genre, such as if in a rap music video, they will have a lot of women and expensive cars in them. This is done very well in this music video, as they made it very obvious that they focus on the heavy metal genre, as they add scary costume designs and blood throughout the video, such as at 3:05 they had someone rip their own face off, this is something that you would probably expect in a heavy metal music video.

STAR PERSONA AND CLOSE UPS

These type of music videos that focus on the artist and their looks most of the time throughout the video, this makes them seem more important and gets you to notice their looks and appearance more
often and focuses on the main star in the video multiple times, usually with many close ups.In this music video they have almost every shot is of the artist, this makes it obvious that they are very important, and we should focus mainly on them. One part of this video where they mainly focus on the artist and their face, is at 3:08 where they show multiple closeups, to simply show how strange Marilyn Manson is.

VOYEURISM

Voyeurism is when a music video focuses mainly on the female body in a sexual way and shows multiple scenes throughout the video that shows that. With showing woman in a sexual way, it could entertain the people who like to see them in a sexual way, which is usually the reason why some artists do this in music videos. In this music video, they show multiple scenes of a woman being showed in a sexual way, Such as at 0:18 and at 0:42.

INTERTEXTUALITY

Intertextuality in a music video is when a music video uses another media text in their music video, such as how some music videos contain parodies of other music videos, which is exactly what happens in this music video made by the band "All Time Low", they show multiple scenes where they parody music videos from other artists, such as at 3:24 and 3:41 where they parody "Lady Gaga" and "Katy Perry". The reason why they would do this is that it might possibly make the audience laugh and entertain them, since this is not something that happens in many music videos.
